Small & Large Works from the Observatory Printshop

Fine-art printmaking sometimes leaves something beautiful behind.

Observatory Miniatures are individually trimmed, small-format astrophotography prints created from the usable portions of larger print runs and gang sheets. Each is produced with the same archival pigment inks and fine-art papers used for our full-size Observatory Prints, but falls outside our standard finished dimensions.

Rather than discard a beautiful piece of the sky simply because it does not conform to a standard size, these smaller works are collected and offered as curated sets of three.

Miniatures are not damaged or defective prints. Every piece must meet the Observatory Printshop’s normal standards for image quality, color, surface condition, and print quality. Prints with damage, printing defects, or other quality issues are never offered for sale. The only distinction is their smaller, nonstandard format.

Because dimensions vary, Observatory Miniatures are not guaranteed to fit standard-size frames. They may be displayed as-is, mounted, custom matted, or simply collected as small pieces of the night sky.

Individual images and dimensions will vary according to what emerges from current printmaking runs, making every assortment a little different. Whenever inventory permits, each set will contain three different images.

Miniatures are packed with care for safe handling and shipment, but do not receive the individual Observatory Archival packaging used for our standard fine-art prints. The three prints are protected together in a single archival-style bag and backing board.

Small Miniatures — 3 Print Set — $30

Large Miniatures — 3 Print Set — $90
Made from pieces originating from 5×7, 6×9 and, 8×10, 11×14 print runs. Finished dimensions vary and may be slightly smaller than those nominal sizes.

Observatory Miniatures are offered only when suitable pieces emerge from the normal printmaking process. Availability is naturally limited and may come and go throughout the year.
