Behind Appalachian Astroworks is simply one craftsman bringing those worlds together.
Appalachian Astroworks grew from a lifelong fascination with the night sky, a deep appreciation for traditional craftsmanship, and the belief that astronomical photographs deserve to become lasting physical objects—not simply files stored on a hard drive.
By profession, I am an airline captain. Aviation has carried me across countless skies, but astronomy has always remained my constant companion. Whether beneath the stars at home, traveling to dark-sky destinations, or operating remote observatories hundreds of miles away, I have always found myself returning to the same question:
That question became Appalachian Astroworks.
Every observation begins long before the first exposure. Equipment is planned and assembled. Weather is studied. Targets are chosen months in advance.
Nights of data are carefully collected, processed, refined, and finally transformed into archival fine art prints using museum-quality materials.
Nothing here is mass produced.
Every print is individually prepared, inspected, and packaged by hand in the Observatory Printshop before it leaves the workshop.
The observatory itself is more than a place to collect images. It is a workshop dedicated to craftsmanship, experimentation, and continual improvement.
New instruments are designed. Old techniques are preserved. Every project becomes another chapter in the Observatory Archive.
Technology allows us to reach farther into the universe than ever before, but patience, curiosity, and careful attention remain the qualities that transform observations into meaningful work.
